“Even if you are totally unexperienced and you’ve never taught before this will give you the confidence to go into the classroom… because we go through it in a very orderly and structured manner it feels very comfortable and I would definitely recommend it. Having that opportunity to go into classrooms and really observe for a good few months rather than it being some sort of crash course… we got a lovely mix of everything. There was also chances to really just step back and watch expert teachers really hone their craft… take ideas and really collaborate with other staff members too. Even though I trained to teach as a Secondary Maths teacher, I actually appreciated that I got to visit a lot of primary schools… seeing how Saint George’s primary transitions to Saint George’s secondary… was absolutely brilliant and seeing the full educational journey that a child goes on… helped me to hone my own craft as a teacher as well. I took upon myself to go into education and it lead me into school, I really wanted to make a difference and teach young minds how to think critically… I just wanted to help guide the youth of Gravesend especially, as Saint George’s was where I grew up in and went to myself.”
“So far the course has been amazing… meeting all the other people on the course… gave us some great experiences across all the schools in the Trust. It seemed like the right course for me, its a mix of teaching within the classroom combined with the theory stuff… the right blend for me to be in the classroom and learn when doing whilst also getting the academic side through aswell. What it was doing was allowing me to build my base better so when I was actually teaching it was a stronger lesson to deliver and my skills have improved quite a lot over the first 3-4 months. Rather than doing a PGCE in university… doing it this way around, you are in the school, in the environment building relationships with the kids throughout the year and that’s the strongest part of being a good teacher I think. I want to use teaching and travel the world a bit such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada… doing this route will open up more doors because its more recognised internationally than just having QTS alone.”
